USS Lexington
CV-2, USS Lexington, was an Lexington Class AirCraft Carrier. Her 2,122 person crew flew 81 aircraft against the Japanese fleet during the war.
After some minor skimishes early in the war she was orderd south to join the Yorktown to pervent the invasion at Port Morsbey. Her planes were in
the thick of the fighting and are credited with hits agaist both japaenese carriers. However the Japanese flight found her while her planes were all
away attacking the Japanese fleet and thus she suffered heavy damage. She was thought to be recoverable however leaking aviation fuel caught fire and
the crew was forced to abandon her. despite attempts to reboard her the damage forced the Americans to sink her in order to pervent her capture and she
was sunk by americna torpedos.
Aichi D3
Aichi D3 was the Japanese bomber of choice at the begining of the war. It was the primary aircraft in the Pearl bombings.
At the battle of the coral sea numerous D3s were sent to provide air cover during the landings. when american aircraft carriers
were learned to be in the area the D3s were sent out on search patrols. The pilots kept mistaking smaller boats for carriers and launching
attacks againts them. On one search mission the flight was running out of gas and had to drop their bombs to reduce drage enough to get back. As
they were struggling back they looked down and saw flattops. thinking they were their carriers they came in for a landing. However they were attempting
to land on the American carrier Lexingtonand when they relized this they aborted the landing and turned back towards their carriers and eventurally just
about out of fuel they landed and reported their position when they saw the American carriers.
